Mississippi River Island - Stotlar Island - Hunt Property
Mississippi River Island in Calhoun County for sale, a few miles from Hamburg! Stotlar Island or Island 476 just north of Hamburg. Location by water is on river marker 262 in the Thomas Chute and just west of Dog Island. Mosier Island and Howard Islands are just down river and Slim, Grimes and McCoy Islands are up river. Location by land is directly east of the Clarence Cannon National Wildlife Refuge (Missouri side) and Upper Mississippi River State Wildlife Management area to the east (Illinois side). The nearest town is Hamburg which is 3.5 miles downriver or south. Mozier landing boat ramp is just 1.5 miles downriver from the property.
Now that I have the location pinned down for you let me tell you about the island! This long 20+ acre island is on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River and has a shallow slough in the center of the island. One side of the island is deep and the other side has nice sandy beaches that gently slop into the river. The island has nice big trees and there is deer sign on the island as well. The obvious use is duck hunting with the 3800+ acre Clarence Cannon Wildlife refuge just across the water from the island to the west and the Illinois side is a mass of waterfowl habitat and refuges. The river ducks such as Canvasbacks, Ringnecks, Redheads and Bufflehead ducks abound. Once the refugee’s get birds the crossing over of Pintails, Teal and Mallards fly over this island in good numbers. Refuge numbers at times are 400,000 to 500,000 Mallards and this island sits smack in the middle of it. By the way the Canadian goose hunting in some years has been very good also.
I mentioned deer sign and the waterfowl potential, however if you are just an old river rat looking for your own island, this one is certainly affordable and easy to access as islands go. Nice beach to kick back, camp, drink a few beers and drown a worm or two. Boaters looking to dock are good to either on the deep side or to just ease onto the sandy beach and tie off.
Not very many places within an hour of St. Louis can you buy a recreational gem such as this for under $40,000! The actual acreage of this island depends on the river height; but for the most part, you can figure between 20 and 27 acres. Waterfowlers, I don’t have to tell you what this neighborhood looks like in terms of food, rest and refuge for the birds. Boaters, summer is right around the corner and what better place to meet up with fellow boaters than your own private beach?
